Epsom and Ewell Foodbank helps people on breadline

5:00am Tuesday 11th December 2012 in  Epsom Guardian News   Volunteers: Keri Marshall, from Voluntary Action Mid Surrey, Lesley Neville, Jonathon Lees and Dennis Ward.   A new scheme has helped more than 200 people who can’t afford to feed themselves in its first 10 weeks. Epsom and Ewell Foodbank, which opened in October, has collected 11.5 tons of donations since August and has so far handed out three tons of it. Our Christmas events for this year include:- Christmas Coffee Morning on Saturday 8th December 2012  10:00-12:00 in aid of Whitechapel Mission for the Homeless. Coffee, Books, Toys, Gifts, Raffle, chit chat and friendship. Our Parade and Toy Service on Sunday 9th December at 10:30 with Tony Miller from the Whitechapel Mission. As part of our worship we donate toys and clothing etc. for children and others less fortunate than ourselves and send them to the Whitechapel Mission. Carols by Candlelight on Sunday 16th December at 18:30. Come and join in a variety of old, well loved carols and also try out some new material. – interspersed with readings. This year’s Advent Bible study follows the Christmas story in a newspaper front page format. Follow the story of Jesus’ coming through sound bites and snippets of background information. Find out what was happening as we look at life in Jesus’ time. Each week starts with an opening chat, a short Bible story, and questions to get folks talking. All are welcome – Church members or not. Monday lunchtimes for 4 weeks until 17th December 2012 – each date ‘stands alone’ – no need to attend all!

We have agreed to support the Epsom & Ewell Foodbank led by Generation Church locally, and seeded by the Trussell Trust nationally. Foodbanks help to prevent family breakdown, housing loss, crime and mental health problems. The team also takes time to listen and signpost people to further support. Epsom & Ewell food bank provides emergency food and support to local people in crisis. How does the food bank work?
