Contractors

Our building is getting on a bit and, although we can do some things ourselves, from time to time we call on contractors and friends we have used over the years and found to be suitable for our needs. These are not recommendations but simply acknowledgements of those whose service we have found suitable for our needs – and we do favour those who are based locally.

Arrowclean – based in Ewell Village we were impressed by the suggestions made for cleaning our Link Room, entrance and Church carpets using their van mounted equipment (and some very long hoses!) The work was carried out without fuss and most of the spots and marks have vanished without trace  – only a couple of small areas in the Church (believed to be rust) remain, although hardly visible to anyone unaware of them. Chris does domestic curtains and upholstery as well.

Bridgewood Decorators – although we try to do as much of the ‘DIY’ style work ourselves (including painting), there comes a time when high ceilings and stairwells are just a bit too much for our aging volunteers! As with all our preferred contractors, Bridgewood are local to us and quickly responded to our enquiry with an acceptable quote and availability date to suit us. Steve and Gary worked around our needs as a multi-use building, finishing the filling and painting of walls and ceiling just as we wanted without problems and well within the time allowed.

Church Energy Purchasing Group. For at least the past two renewal periods, our Church has used the services of CEPG, an energy broker, to guide us towards what they consider is the best renewal deal for our energy (and water) supplies. Before that quotations for renewals were obtained from brokers recommended by individuals
The use of CEPG saves our Church much investigative work, and is akin to using an insurance broker (these days largely replaced by the large on-line organisations.)
There has never been any reason to doubt the value of the advice given to us by CEPG, either in terms of suppliers recommended, term recommended, or general advice given based on their knowledge of our individual circumstances, and I have no reason not to trust their judgement.

DPB Pristine Oven Cleaning – the six burner cooker in our Church kitchen gets regular use by our youth groups, parties, etc – in fact anyone who uses our premises. With this wide variety of use we like to try and present the cooker (and the rest of the Church Centre of course) as best we can, but we tend to leave the deep cleaning to the professionals. Dave is another of our local contractors who we are happy to use repeatedly – he works without fuss or mess, and the cooker always looks too good to use when he has finished!

Drain Detectives – more an emergency service than the above, but very thorough and sorted out our puzzling rainwater system at the agreed time and rate, cleaning up well afterwards.

Final Touch Contracts – our local carpet and flooring contractor with a shop on Stoneleigh Broadway. They gave us a very attractive price when we were looking to lay new carpet tiles in our meeting room and long side corridor, replacing a variety of existing floor coverings that were well worn over the years. We had good advice on the way forward, and the whole job was finished in a single day. And I’ve never before come in after a job of any sort and found the place so clean and tidy!

First Carpentry  – Steve is our ‘carpenter of choice’ – steady, methodical, reliable and the quality of his work is excellent. He has made and hung all our fire doors, built cupboards from scratch etc.

Gemini Blinds – when we were looking to replace two of the high level blinds in the Church we thought there would be a number of local companies to choose from. How wrong can you be – comments like “we don’t work at height” and “we will need you to erect scaffolding for us to work from” quite frankly amazed us – and then along came Bryan from Gemini with his ‘can do’ approach. A splendid, value for money job – just to show there are proper tradesmen still out there.

Industraheat – Gas legislation means that we are limited in the contractors qualified to install and maintain our main heating boilers, and we have used Industraheat (based in Ashtead) for a few years now. They installed a new boiler in April 2015 as the best of three quotations we sought, and are always quick to respond on the rare occasions we have needed them urgently.

M&M Tree Surgeons – Not only a very competitive quote, but a pleasure to deal with, leaving the site after trimming back several large conifers much tidier than it was (2021)!

North Surrey Glazing – a father and son team who seem to know the glazing industry back to front – when we asked them to quote to replace some cracked single glazing in the Church Martin immediately identified the pattern, point out that several other panes had been replaced previously with a slightly different pattern; something I’d never noticed! An excellent job with everything cleared up afterwards, and at a reasonable price.

P & D Andrews – Needing our Church Hall completely redecorated, we awarded this job to David based on his very competitive price, his excellent responses when inspecting the site initially, and references from previous customers. We were not disappointed and found David and his father Peter to be well up to the standards reported by others – his work includes domestic decorations as well. We have since invited David back to redecorate a meeting room and side corridor – happy to use him, again.

Richard Baxter – our recently ‘discovered’ plasterer who quickly and efficiently plastered our water damaged ceilings after repairs. No fuss, no mess, and a very reasonable price too.

Rubbish King – we usually dispose of Church rubbish through our weekly wheely bin collections, but over the years had accumulated a quantity of heavy old doors, scenery, and general materials that we always thought would be useful ‘sometime’. Finding Luke who lives locally and used to come to Cubs and Scouts here proved to be a far better option that the skip we were considering. Not only was all the rubbish gone in less than an hour, but he collected it from around the building too. He does house clearances too. When we needed a relatively small load (an old dismantled metal shed) collected, Luke and Jack were there bang on time (in the pouring rain) – job completed with no fuss or bother, and an excellent price too.

South Thames Roofing – a very local firm that we’ve used for a few years with no problems whatsoever. Stephen is happy to quote for anything connected with roofs and gutters, and recently attended to several areas of flat roofing that, after 80 years, needed a little more than simply covering over with another layer of felt!

Stand-By Fire – after years of having our fire extinguishers serviced annually by one of the ‘big’ companies, we discovered Stand-By in Morden. Long established and with a wide range of support services in fire protection and associated areas, their annual visits have proved to be effective, reliable and value for money.

Threeways Plumbing & Heating – our local plumber who we use for our modifications and repairs to internal pipework and fittings. An excellent worker, and now his son has joined ‘the firm’ too.

Trans-Tek – based on Stoneleigh Broadway, Trans-Tek look after our media needs – fixed projectors and screens, and also advising on speaker placement in Church.
